Dr Healey was formally trained during his residency at the university of
connecticut and through long island university to provide orthodontic care for
children. There are two dental specialties recognized by the American Dental
Association that provide and are board tested in orthodontic procedures. One
specialty is proceedure specific, and they are orthodontists. The other specialty is an age
specific specialty, and they are pediatric dentists. Dr. Healey is a board certified pediatric
dentist. He regularly attends the educational annual meetings of the American
Association of Orthodontists, and is a member of the foundation of orthodontic
research. He had a 20 year relationship with the orthodontist who first discovered how
the human face grows, and the relationship of the tmj to facial development, Dr Robert
M Ricketts, through the for.
Dr Healey provides both silver and clear porcelain braces for his patients needs. A
segmented edgewise technique is used, which is the most efficient way to correct
asymetries (where one side needs to me moved further than the other side). He has been
using thermoplastic tooth positioners since 1985 commonly known by the advertising of
a large company as invisallign. when applicable he uses another company (clear
correct) that keeps manufacturing within the usa.
Interceptive orthodontics can have a dramatic effect in making a potentially
large problem much smaller through treating before all the permanent teeth erupt.
For example, studies have shown that treating a functional crossbite (child shifts jaw
to one side to chew due to the upper jaw being narrow due to thumbsucking, pacifier, or
tongue tie) in the primary dentition at age 4 results in no skeletal asymetry, where
waiting until age 12 often time leaves an asymetric (crooked) face, even though the
teeth are straight.
All parents are encouraged to accompany their children through all their visits
and ask as many questions as they like. Dr Healey feels that this gives the children the
best care compared to having you sit out in the waiting room getting the 30 second
